In fact, a study from a few years ago found that 87 million Americans had to repair a damaged phone within the last 12 months. Damaged screens accounted for 45% of these repairs. And that number doesn’t even include those who decided to replace their damaged phones entirely with new ones.

So, if you’re anything like me, you’re probably wondering what options are available to protect your phone besides just relying on the manufacturer warranty.

Manufacturer Warranty vs. Phone Insurance: Understanding the Difference

Before we delve into what phone protection plan you should consider, it’s important to understand the distinction between a warranty and insurance. This can often be confusing when trying to determine what is covered and what is not.

However, it’s crucial to understand that none of these warranties cover accidental damage, such as a cracked screen or other damage caused accidentally. To repair a cracked screen on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, for instance, Apple estimates a cost of $379. Samsung’s screen repair costs vary depending on the model, starting from a little over $100 for the Galaxy A54 5G and going up to $499 for a Galaxy Fold. Without insurance, you would be responsible for covering these costly repairs out of pocket.

– Asurion provides coverage starting at $5 per month, with unlimited screen repairs for the first three months. Allstate offers a $13 monthly plan that includes phone repair and roadside service.

It’s important to carefully review the details of each insurance plan, including the number of claims allowed within a year and any specific sign-up requirements. Additionally, you may already have secondary phone insurance coverage through credit card benefits, homeowners insurance, or renters insurance, so it’s worth exploring those options as well.

Ultimately, whether you choose to rely solely on the manufacturer warranty or invest in phone insurance will depend on your personal circumstances and risk tolerance.
