The Nevada Division of Insurance has released a list of ways to better navigate home insurance policies as the Davis Fire continues to burn in south Reno.
“The events surrounding the Davis Fire are a challenge to all affected Nevadans. The Division of Insurance joins with all other state agencies working to keep loss of property to a minimum,” said Nevada Insurance Commissioner Scott Kipper.
What to know about insurance and wildfire
People should review their policy, and scan it for any special amendments that may exclude coverage under certain circumstances, the insurance division recommends.
Homeowners are urged to prepare a physical copy, as well as a digital copy for easy access in case of an evacuation.
Policyholders can also meet with their insurance agent or company their policy was purchased through. Policies could potentially be tailored to specific needs.
The division also advises homeowners to prepare a home inventory of valuables. More is also available on the division’s website at doi.nv.gov. The NAIC Home Inventory app for iPhone and Android is also available for free to assist with creating an inventory.

If you’ve been evacuated, the division recommends getting in touch with your carrier afterwards. It’s recommended policyholders discuss information in their policy with their carrier, including coverages in loss of use and smoke damage.
Around 20,000 people were evacuated just after the fire started last weekend.
The Davis Fire was burning on over 5,600 acres as of Wednesday afternoon and was 37% contained.
The evacuation center in Reno was moved to the Neil Road Recreation Center at 3925 Neil Road on Wednesday. The shelter for small pets was also moved from the Senior Center to Washoe County Regional Animal Services at 2825 Longley Lane in Reno on Wednesday.
Large animals can be taken to the University of Nevada, Reno Equestrian Center in Reno off Valley Road or to Fuji Park in Carson City at Old Clear Creek Road, near Costco.
