Andrew George – Business Insurance

PREVIOUS POSITION: London-based global head, energy and power, Marsh LLC

OUTLOOK FOR THE INDUSTRY: The world is becoming increasingly interconnected, risk-filled and unpredictable, with the pace of change due to technological innovation greater than ever before. As an industry, we must continue to enhance the insights and specialized solutions we offer our clients, enabling them to prepare for, navigate and thrive in such transformative times.

GOALS FOR YOUR NEW POSITION: At Marsh, our clients and colleagues are central to our ongoing success and market leadership. We have deep specialization and enable clients across many industries to play key roles in society. We need to remain committed to consistently and seamlessly deliver the best insights and solutions that Marsh, and Marsh McLennan, have to offer to all clients. This means fostering collaboration across our specialties, risk practices, placement and advisory consulting services to ensure we are exceeding clients’ needs effectively. Equally important is our dedication to our colleagues and talent. We need to strive to place colleagues in roles that align with their strengths and aspirations, enabling them to reach their full potential for growth. I am confident that when both our clients and colleagues are satisfied, we will naturally achieve our more traditional goals of revenue growth and margin expansion.

CHALLENGES FACING THE INDUSTRY: As an industry, attracting and retaining skilled professionals for key roles is always a challenge given the talent shortage we are facing. We also need to do a better job as an industry in bringing together our collective resources, capabilities and expertise to address and accelerate the development of innovative solutions that help clients prepare for and navigate the evolving risks of today and tomorrow.

FIRST EXPERIENCE: I joined Marsh (Sedgwick) in August 1988 and worked as a junior account executive for our offshore energy business. I have been with Marsh ever since, taking various roles in different countries and have chosen the path of exploring internal opportunities for progression rather than moving to other firms.

ADVICE FOR A NEWCOMER: Learn about yourself and not just the image of what you want to be. Knowing my strengths and weaknesses has enabled me to focus on where I need to improve and where I can use the strength of a team to enhance my output for clients.

DREAM JOB: Running my own restaurant (Cache Trente), but it will have a different format.

LOOKING FORWARD TO: Meeting new clients, new colleagues and striving to add value for them.

FAVORITE MEAL: Cotoletta Alla Milanese

FAVORITE BOOK: “I’m OK, You’re OK,” by Thomas Anthony Harris. A very simple and practical guide to transactional analysis. And for fun, “Mr. American,” by George MacDonald Fraser.

HOBBIES: Reading, cooking and the study of wine

FAVORITE TV SHOW: “The Night Manager”

ON A SATURDAY AFTERNOON: To be as creative and imaginative as possible with food, whether in the kitchen or outdoors.
