Former Vermont Mutual President William Brooks passes peacefully


Vermont Business Magazine Retired Vermont Mutual President, CEO and Board Chair, William H. Brooks, passed peacefully at the age of 94 on April 12, 2025. Mr. Brooks served as Vermont Mutual’s President from 1986 to 1995. 

Vermont Mutual grew and strengthened under Mr. Brooks leadership and he earned the respect, confidence and admiration of colleagues, agents, community members and company and state officials throughout the region. 

Mr. Brooks distinguished career at Vermont Mutual began as Special Agent, later, Assistant to the Vice President, then Vice President, Director, Executive Vice President, President, Chief Executive Officer and Board Chair. 

Mr. Brooks served his company and industry in many roles. He served as Chairman of the Vermont Insurance Guaranty Association, Chairman of the Guaranty Fund Management Corporation, President of the Vermont Association of Property and Casualty Insurance Companies, Director and Member of the Executive Committee of the Mutual Fire Insurance Association of New England, President, Director and Executive Committee member of Franklin Insurance Association, Director and Vice President of Champlain Casualty Company of Vermont, Director of N. L. Industries, Director and Vice Chairman of Alliance of American Insurers. 

A funeral service and remembrance was held at Peck Funeral Home in Braintree, MA on Friday, April 18. He is survived by eldest daughter Susan B. Drinker, daughter Debra B. Mango and son William M. Brooks.
