Birmingham-based Protective Life names new president, COO


Birmingham-based Protective Life Corp. has announced two leadership changes for the new year.

Paul Wells, currently an executive vice president and chief financial officer, will become president and CFO on Jan. 1, 2026.

In addition, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Wade Harrison will become vice chairman.

CEO Rich Bielen, who has served in that office since 2017, will continue in the role.

Wells will be charged with executing Protective’s strategic objectives and leading its financial organization which now includes investments and acquisitions.

Harrison will continue overseeing Protective’s retail businesses, operations, technology and marketing, with a focus on ensuring strategic alignment across the company.

Bielen praised both men as “instrumental in leading Protective through a period of growth and transformation, and they exemplify the leadership we need as we plan for the future.”

“These promotions recognize their contributions and ensure Protective is well-positioned to continue executing our strategy and achieving our goals to protect more people,” Bielen said.

Protective Life, a subsidiary of Dai-ichi Life Holdings, Inc., has $125 billion in assets and offers life insurance, annuity, asset protection and employee benefit solutions.
