STATEWIDE, Colo. (KKTV) – The Department of Insurance held a webinar Wednesday night for those who are beginning to navigate insurance claims after Colorado’s several wildfires.
Colorado Insurance Commissioner Michael Conway said homeowners should immediately start insurance claims after a loss and request a copy of their policy. He said the company must provide a copy within three business days.
According to Conway, Colorado law requires insurers to offer at least 65% of personal property coverage upfront after a total loss, before a full inventory is completed. The remaining 35% could require more detailed documentation depending on the company.
Additional Living Expense (ALE) coverage can be beneficial for those dealing with wildfires and loss. Conway said ALE coverage could help pay for additional costs, including temporary housing, increased food costs, commuting expenses, and pet boarding during displacement or mandatory evacuations. Officials say documentation is critical to ensure you get paid back.
Officials also encourage wildfire survivors to collect and save any and all photos of their home to include details of the home itself and their belongings. If you do not believe that you have sufficient photos, you are encouraged to reach out to friends and family to see if they can share additional photos as well.
Documentation is also critical for any emergency repairs. When you get back to your home, officials recommend that you take before and after photos of any repairs that you may be conducting.
When considering contractors, Conway recommends that residents thoroughly verify contractors, including their insurance coverage. He recommends that you ask for references, choose someone local and ensure that the contractor has experience with insurance claims.
Officials stressed that individuals need to listen to trusted sources and refrain from listening to rumors.
Customers with concerns about their insurance company or claims process are urged to contact the Colorado Division of Insurance and file a complaint.
