Grayslake woman charged with insurance fraud for allegedly falsely reporting car stolen in McHenry

Lauren D. Porras, 28, of Grayslake.

A Grayslake woman has been arrested after she allegedly committed insurance fraud by falsely reporting her husband’s vehicle stolen in McHenry, court records show.

Lauren D. Porras, 28, of Grayslake, was charged with insurance fraud over $10,000, a Class 2 felony, and false report of offense, a Class 4 felony.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Porras “knowingly and unlawfully” obtained and concealed a black 2018 Kia Forte around January 11, 2022.

The car belonged to her husband and Porras made a false report to the McHenry Police Department that the car had been stolen, the complaint said.

Porras had “no reasonable grounds to believe a motor vehicle theft” had been committed, the complaint said.

The complaint said a claim was filed with Geico Auto Insurance, who assessed the vehicle as a total loss.

The insurance company paid $15,494.89 to Porras and her husband, who then transferred ownership of the missing car to Geico, the complaint said.

Porras was charged in October and an arrest warrant was issued.

She was taken into custody on March 1 and transported to the McHenry County Jail.

A judge initially set her bond at $50,000 and another judge later reduced the bond to $10,000 on Friday.

Porras was released from the jail after posting 10% of the bond.

She is scheduled to appear in court again on March 24 for a preliminary hearing.
