AAA rate cuts highlight a bigger trend. Why experts say drivers should shop around | WINK Smart

AAA lowering rates for Florida home and car insurance | State

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, (WINK) — Earlier this week, WINK News told you AAA was lowering rates on select home and auto insurance policies in Florida.

Now, insurance experts say the announcement is about much more than one company.

“Because there are so many insurers filing for rate reductions… overall we’ve seen over 40 Florida auto insurers cut rates since the beginning of last year,” said Mark Friedlander with the Insurance Information Institute.

Friedlander says that’s why even drivers who don’t have AAA should pay attention.

“There is no other state that compares to Florida when it comes to the volume and types of rate decreases that we’ve been seeing since the beginning of last year,” he said.

According to Friedlander, legislative reforms passed in recent years have helped stabilize Florida’s insurance market by reducing litigation and fraud while improving predictability in claims costs. He says that has allowed more insurers to file for rate reductions.

That could benefit drivers like Mike Ludmerer.

Ludmerer doesn’t have AAA. He has auto insurance through Root and State Farm.

Still, Friedlander says today’s announcement is a reminder that now may be the perfect time for drivers like Ludmerer to compare quotes and see if another company can offer a better rate.

“It’ll make it easier to pay for other things… like car repairs on the car or anything really. Gas. Yeah, gas especially,” Ludmerer said.

Friedlander says drivers shouldn’t assume they’re getting the best rate simply because they’ve stayed with the same insurance company.

“If you’re not seeing relief in your individual bill, it’s definitely a great time to shop. Get several quotes from national insurers, regional insurers, take advantage of discounts… one of the best is where you bundle your auto with either your home or your renter’s insurance policy,” he said.

According to AAA, the latest rate reductions apply only to certain insurance programs in Florida, including:

  • Select Package Home policies, which received an average 5% rate reduction.
  • Monoline auto policies through Auto Club South Insurance Company (ACSIC), which received an average 5% rate reduction.
  • Package auto policies through Auto Club Insurance Company of Florida (ACICF), which received an average 4% rate reduction.

AAA says new auto policies began receiving the lower rates June 1, while renewal policies will begin reflecting the changes Aug. 1. Home insurance rate reductions took effect March 1 for new business and May 1 for renewal policies.

The company says drivers with full coverage may see even greater savings because of deeper reductions in physical damage coverages.

AAA says these latest reductions build on multiple rate cuts implemented in 2025 that have delivered more than $70 million in annual savings for Florida customers. The company estimates this latest round of reductions alone will save Florida policyholders more than $28 million annually.

In addition to shopping around, AAA recommends maintaining a safe driving record, asking about available discounts, considering usage-based insurance programs, bundling home and auto insurance, reducing risk around your home through maintenance and improvements, and reviewing your coverage regularly to make sure it still meets your needs.
