Alabama bill would require insurance to cover ambulance rides & emergency treatment

MARSHALL COUNTY, Ala. (WAFF) – Ambulance services in Alabama could see financial relief under a bill awaiting Gov. Kay Ivey’s signature.

Senate Bill 269 would require insurance companies to cover ambulance transportation to hospitals in emergencies and treatment paramedics provide at the scene.

Shane Parker, director of Marshall Medical Ambulance, said not every insurance company currently covers ambulance rides or on-scene treatment. That forces ambulance services to bill patients directly.

Many patients cannot afford the bills, and EMS services lose money, Parker said.

Parker said reimbursement from insurance companies would relieve financial strain on ambulance services.

“When counties have ambulance companies closing frequently because they just can’t survive financially. So, the human aspect is they recognize that if there’s no ambulance coming your bill or the premiums really don’t matter if you can’t get to the hospital,” Parker said.

If signed into law, the bill would take effect Oct. 1.
