ALL-NEW ‘20/20’ FEATURES CO-ANCHOR DEBORAH ROBERTS REPORTING ON A DEADLY FAMILY DRAMA INVOLVING AN INHERITANCE, A MOTHER LOST AT SEA, AND A YOUNG MAN NAMED NATHAN CARMAN

ABC News*

Nathan Carman was found alone at sea, adrift on a life raft during a fishing trip with his mother, Linda, in 2016. When a cargo ship rescued Nathan following an extensive Coast Guard search, Linda was nowhere to be found. Now, in an all-new “20/20,” co-anchor Deborah Roberts investigates this shocking case that left many wondering if 22-year-old Nathan was a loving son or a calculated killer when it came to light that his mother’s disappearance followed the unsolved murder of Nathan’s millionaire grandfather, John Chakalos. Nathan has denied any involvement in both cases. Hear for the first time from law enforcement and family members, who recount the harrowing details, on a new episode of “20/20,” airing Friday, April 4 (9:01-11:00 p.m. EDT), on ABC, next day on Hulu.

When Nathan is found adrift at sea, rescuers quickly notice he does not exhibit the signs of someone clinging for life. He doesn’t appear dehydrated or hypothermic. After an extensive search, the U.S. Coast Guard declared Nathan’s mom presumed dead at sea. What seemed like a miraculous survival story for Nathan soon raised questions as authorities began to probe the mysterious circumstances of the sinking boat.

As the investigation unfolded, authorities discovered that Nathan’s grandfather, John Chakalos, had been murdered three years earlier. His execution-style death in his Windsor, Connecticut, home shocked all who knew him, but the killer was never found, and Nathan repeatedly denied involvement in both his mother and grandfather’s deaths. Police and law enforcement investigators say evidence began to tell a different story.

This “20/20” episode includes exclusive and never-before-heard interviews with key law enforcement officials, including Alfred Bucco of the South Kingston Police Department; Sgt. Chris McKee and Scott McGregor, retired officers with the Windsor Police Department; Eric Gempp, retired from the U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Services; FBI retired agent Lisa Tutty; as well as family members Charlene Gallagher, Nathan’s Aunt, and Charles LaPenna, nephew of John Chakalos. Additional interviews include David Farrell, attorney for Nathan’s boat insurance companies, and author Casey Sherman, who wrote an upcoming book about the case “Blood in the Water.” They all shed new light on these deaths.
