Fort Myers, a city located along the Caloosahatchee River in Florida, is renowned for its boating culture, with the azure waterways a favorite haunt of both seasoned sailors and amateur enthusiasts. As an active participant in promoting safety and education in the local boating community, America’s Boating Club Fort Myers is offering the America’s Boating Course to the public. This state-approved course covers Florida’s boating laws, boat handling, navigating, and anchoring.
Emphasizing Safety and Legal Compliance
The course is a prerequisite for individuals born on or after January 1, 1988, who wish to operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or more. It also provides potential savings on boat insurance, reinforcing the importance of safety instruction and responsible boating practices. Despite an abundance of experienced boaters, a significant number of boating accidents and fatalities occur due to a lack of formal training and understanding of safety measures. In 2022, out of the 636 boating fatalities, none involved operators who had taken a boating class from America’s Boating Club.
Course Details and Registration
Registration for the America’s Boating Course commenced on February 25, with the classes scheduled to start on March 3 and conclude on March 10. The course fee ranges from $50 for individuals to $60 for couples sharing materials. The package includes a comprehensive boating manual and refreshments. Upon successful completion of the course and a short test, participants will receive a Florida Boater ID card, a testament to their proficiency and commitment to safe boating practices.
A Legacy of Service
The Fort Myers Power Squadron, which is hosting the course, has been an integral part of the community for 70 years. By offering this course, they continue their legacy of service, educating the public about the importance of safety and legal compliance while out on the water.
