Swiss Re named Andreas Berger, current head of Corporate Solutions, to succeed Christian Mumenthaler as group chief executive, effective July 1.
“The board unanimously determined that Andreas Berger is the right person to build on the firm’s current momentum and lead Swiss Re into the next phase of its development,” stated Jacques de Vaucleroy, vice chairman of Swiss Re’s board, expressing confidence in Berger’s leadership.
Berger, a German national, joined Swiss Re in March 2019 as CEO of Corporate Solutions and a member of the group executive committee. His leadership was instrumental in the successful turnaround of the company’s commercial business insurance arm, corporate solutions.
The transition comes at a time of strong recovery for Swiss Re, with a 580% surge in net profit in 2023. Mumenthaler, who joined Swiss Re in 1999 and served as CEO since July 2016, will be leaving the company. A spokesperson described the handover as an “orderly transition,” noting that the company is well-positioned and the markets are favorable.
Berger will step down as the CEO of Corporate Solutions, and the selection process for his successor has been initiated. &
