AROUND ALASKA: Women Veterans, Salmon Restrictions, and Summer Solstice! | Around Alaska


The 2nd annual Women Veteran’s Conference is set for this weekend in Wasilla. The event aims to inspire, educate, and empower women who have served in our military. Female veterans from all branches of the Armed Forces are expected to be on hand Saturday for the big event at Settler’s Bay Lodge in Wasilla.

Did you hear about the new restrictions for salmon fishing? The Juneau Empire reports many Juneau-area waters will be closed to king salmon fishing starting Monday. The waters will remain closed until August 31 because of a low projected spawning population.

Drivers are now welcome to cross over Hatcher Pass on the Willow Fishhook Road. Crews from the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities in Mat-Su have spent the past few weeks clearing away snow. The road is open now from Hatcher Pass all the way to Willow.

You might get a discount on boat insurance if you complete an Alaska Water Wise course. The course, offered by the Alaska Safety Boating Program, will be given on Zoom on June 25 and 27. After completing both courses and passing an exam, you’ll get your Alaska Boater’s Card. Email annie.grenier@alaska.gov to sign up or ask for more information.

And finally, the Alaska State Troopers couldn’t let the summer solstice pass in the land of the midnight sun without snapping a scenic shot of a police cruiser. Troopers remind everyone that they will be out on the roads, trails, and boardwalks this summer making sure Alaskans stay safe.
