Barley MacTavish helps high school graduate with car insurance

EDITOR’S NOTE – The Barley MacTavish Fund was established to assist Midland County residents facing financial hardship or distress. To request assistance from the Barley MacTavish Fund dial 2-1-1 and ask to speak to the Connections Manager for the 211 of Northeast Michigan LIFT Program.

There is no real Barley MacTavish. This fund was established by an anonymous donor and is being continued with private financial support, plus donations from area residents during the holiday season. The project has been undertaken to help make Midland a little better place to live. Letters to Barley are not from actual applicants, but do represent typical requests. Names of applicants are never published.

This summer is the time for me to work full time as I prepare to begin my first year in college starting in the fall. After I graduated from high school, I moved in with my grandma who helped raise me and I was fortunate enough to take care of her in her last two years. It was my full time job and I loved it.

I inherited many of her treasures, including her car. It is perfect for my 45-minute commute to school. As the official owner of this car, I need to pay for the car insurance. It is a lot more than I expected. A neighbor suggested I contact you. Would you be able to help me with this? Thank you for reading my letter.

Dear Friend,

It was heartwarming to read your letter sharing your close connection to your grandmother. You gave back what she gave to you. I know you will always think of her fondly as you drive to school. I will gladly pay for your first car insurance bill. Stay safe on the roads.
