BILLINGS, Mont. – Some residents in Billings have expressed confusion regarding service plans offered by Montana Dakota Utilities (MDU).
Since 2013, MDU has partnered with HomeServe, a home service repair company. HomeServe offers subscription services that cover home repairs, such as water and gas lines.
One Billings resident shared their confusion in a Facebook group, questioning whether the service is covered by their home insurance policy.
HomeServe clarified the difference, stating, “Most standard homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover normal wear and tear repairs, or replacement of the equipment or systems covered under the HomeServe service plans. And, even if a rider is available and added to cover such repairs, the deductible still makes it a more expensive option than a HomeServe repair plan. […] We encourage homeowners to check out the details of their own coverage before deciding.”
HomeServe also mentioned that customers go through an eligibility process to determine if the coverage is necessary for them.
However, a local insurance company indicated that water and gas lines are typically covered by most home insurance policies.
Both companies advised customers to conduct their own research before making a decision.
