‘Can we both accumulate no-claims discounts driving the same car?’

My spouse and I recently decided to sell one of our cars.

We each have an unblemished no-claims record of more than 20 years.

If we went back to having two cars between us in the future, would one of us lose our no-claims discount?

‘You came up with an innovative solution’

Mike Croxford, Which? Money expert, says…

A hefty no-claims discount like yours can make a substantial difference to your car insurance premium.

Your fears are well-founded: only one person can be the main driver on an insurance policy.

The other named driver can’t themselves build up more no-claims years on the policy.

Some insurers reward named drivers who don’t claim, but only if they renew with the same insurer.

Change the policy from one year to the next, swapping the main driver between you

Moreover, if one of you doesn’t have an insurance plan as the main driver for two complete years they will lose all of their no-claims discount.

The solution you’ve hit upon is to change the policy from one year to the next, swapping the main driver between you.

To avoid committing ‘fronting’ – a criminal offence – the main driver on the policy must do the most miles per year.

Luckily you said you already tend to share the driving 50/50.
