Darrell H. Nelson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, businessman, and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, at the age of 91.
Darrell was born on September 25, 1934, in Payson, Utah, and later raised in the Genola area, where he developed a lifelong love of hard work, the outdoors, and friendly competition. He was the son of Radcliffe Raymond Nelson and Thelma Rosely Nelson. He was baptized in May 1943 in Warm Springs southwest of Genola—an experience he often recalled with humor due to the cold water that day.
On June 25, 1953, Darrell married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Enan Miller, in the Manti Utah Temple. Their love story began when they met as sophomores in high school, and they spent more than seven decades together building a life centered on faith, family, and shared adventure.
Darrell and Pat raised six children—three sons and three daughters—instilling in them the values of honesty, integrity, service, and perseverance. He was a devoted family man who took great pride in his children and grandchildren and cherished family reunions, celebrations, and time spent together.
Darrell attended school in Goshen and Payson, Utah. A gifted musician and athlete, he played trumpet, earned First Chair in the All-State Symphony Orchestra, and received the Curtis Award. He also lettered in basketball, football, and track. His competitive spirit followed him throughout life.
Professionally, Darrell enjoyed a long and distinguished business career, primarily in the insurance and financial services industries. He was president of his own life insurance company, American International Marketing, and made a significant positive contribution to the industry. In 1965, he was honored by being listed among the Leading Men of the United States of America.
Darrell served faithfully in many positions within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Radcliffe and Thelma Nelson; his son Gregory Darrell Nelson; and his daughter Terrie Enan Nelson Rasmussen.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Enan Nelson; his children Mark Nelson (Jessica), Cindy Nelson (Randy), Gordon Nelson (Joane), and Lorrie Nelson Madsen; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends.
Darrell spent his entire life helping people. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
