PLAINVILLE, Mass. (WJAR) — Displaced residents in Plainville told NBC 10 their apartment complex is no longer paying for their living arrangements after a fire damaged their building two weeks ago.
Several residents of the Village Green Apartments in Plainville have been living in a hotel in Mansfield since the fire.
The residents said they were promised by the apartment complex a paid stay in a hotel for a month, but on Wednesday residents received notice that the apartment complex wouldn’t pay anymore.
“We feel like they’re just leaving us out in the cold literally,” said Lori Lennox of Plainville. “Now they’re telling us that we have to leave by tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. at checkout.”
The cause of the initial fire was suspected arson by one of the tenants.
“It feels like we’re being punished for something that we weren’t capable of controlling,” said Bernardo Jabouin of Plainville.
The tenants told NBC 10 many of them have renters insurance as required by the landlord.
“What happens with the renters insurance, they reimburse you later and with it being the holiday weekend we’ve had a hard time reaching them,” said Lennox.
Renters insurance costs about $20 a month and will often pay for housing after a fire.
NBC 10 reached out to the property management to see if there was anything more they could do, but they haven’t responded.
