The Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Insurance Division advises the public to review and understand their insurance coverages and deductibles for the wet season.
“Everyone should know what their insurance policies cover and the out-of-pocket expenses they are responsible for, before their insurance takes effect,” Insurance Commissioner Gordon I. Ito said. “If they are unsure, policyholders can contact their agent or insurance company with questions.”
For most homeowners and renters insurance policies, flood damage is not covered.
Those who are interested in adding flood coverage to their homeowners and renters insurance policy should visit this website or contact your agent. Customers should plan accordingly as there is a 30-day waiting period.
“As parts of the state faced possible flooding and strong winds this week, we are reminded that natural disasters can be unpredictable and flooding can happen anytime and anywhere,” added Ito.
Earlier this week, heavy rainfall impacted Maui causing multiple road closures around the island. Some Kahului residents experienced flooding in their front yards, eventually seeping into their homes.
The flooding on Maui also led to a car rescue on Tuesday. The flood waters quickly rose, causing two Kihei residents to be trapped inside their vehicles.
