Drivers impacted by flooding encouraged to look into insurance policy

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Flash flooding overnight affected traffic and even trapped some vehicles in Birmingham.

A car on Messer Airport Highway was stuck, with water nearly up to the trunk.

There are multiple factors at play when determining how situations like these are covered.

AAA Alabama said a driver’s insurance carrier and policy matter, and so does the damage in question.

Flash flooding can ruin an engine or damage the front end of a vehicle. That is if a driver ran off the road or hit a pothole.

“There’s lots of different types of damage that you could incur, and you just need to have a clear understanding of your personal auto insurance policy,” said Clay Ingram with AAA Alabama.

If a driver neglected their vehicle, perhaps by leaving the windows open in the rain which ruined the interior, Ingram said odds are they will not be covered.

Right now, AAA is urging drivers to take a closer look into their policy by meeting with a professional to see what is taken care of.

“Every policy is different, and you just need to be sure to sit down with your agent and talk through those things and make sure that you have the type of coverage that you need,” Ingram said.
