DTRIC Insurance intends to transition to a run-off insurance carrier in Hawai‘i.
As a run-off insurance carrier, the firm no longer will issue new or renew existing policies. DTRIC will, however, continue to administer all active policies for its thousands of car, home and renters insurance customers throughout the state.

It also will be responsible for managing claims and meeting its contractual and statutory obligations during the next several years.
The carrier’s parent company MS&AD gave notice about a week ago of its intent, as required by state law.
The Honolulu-based insurance company — its name name a combination of the initials of founding partners Dai Tokyo and Royal Insurance Co. — in 2022 celebrated 30 years of serving only Hawai‘i.
MS&AD Insurance Group — the Hawai’i company’s parent firm — is Japan’s largest insurance holding company and the eighth largest property and casualty insurance group in the world.
Hawai‘i Insurance Division encourages affected policyholders to contact their agents to identify coverage options.
Vehicle and homeowners insurance guides and premium comparison sheets are also available online. Consumers can use these informational guides to review and compare sample premiums from insurance companies licensed in Hawai‘i.
If homeowners are unable to obtain homeowners or dwelling fire coverage from a private insurer, they could qualify for coverage from Hawai‘i Property Insurance Association.
“Consumers have ample time to find a replacement carrier. We advise them to ask family, friends and coworkers for referrals, as well as ensuring they understand their new policy and payment plans before signing anything,” said Hawai‘i Insurance Commissioner Scott Saiki in a state release about DTRIC’s move. “Lastly, they should verify that they are working with an authorized and licensed insurance broker.”
An insurance licensee search tool and additional consumer resources can be found at the Hawai‘i Insurance Division website.
Hawai‘i Insurance Division staff are available to assist the public with questions by phone at 808-586-2790 and email via insurance@dcca.hawaii.gov.
