CADILLAC — As the greater Cadillac area continues to deal with severe flooding, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is offering tips to help residents affected by the flooding file insurance claims.
In a press release by the DIFS, the agency states that most homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover flood damage. It’s important to be aware that the term “flood” may have a specialized meaning under an insurance policy.
It can be for different causes of water damage, including storm-related rainwater intrusion, sewer backup, or a failing sump pump, which may be covered under the policy.
The DIFS advises residents to contact their insurance agent or company to review their policy, determine what coverage may be available and file any claims.
Before contacting anyone, residents should have their policy number and other relevant information available. Report damage to your home or vehicle and file a claim
Residents should take steps to protect their property and prevent further loss. It’s recommended that you keep receipts for any purchases of supplies that are needed to protect the property.
Documenting the damage is also important. The DIFS says residents should take pictures or videos of damaged items. Do not get rid of the items until instructed to do so by the insurance company.
Frauds and scams may become more prevalent following the flooding. The DIFS says fraudsters claiming to be adjusters, contractors and other service providers often go door-to-door pretending to offer services.
This can include services like debris cleanup or building repairs that will not be completed or may be completed with poor-quality materials or shoddy workmanship.
It’s recommended that you contact your insurance company before hiring a contractor to check their credentials, including licenses, references and insurance.
It’s important to note that insurance adjusters are paid by the insurance company and should never ask homeowners for any payment for their services that are covered by their homeowner’s or renter’s policy.
Residents are welcome to contact the DIFS with questions or concerns about insurance coverage. The agency does encourage people to first attempt to resolve any issues directly with their insurance company.
The DIFS’ Office of Consumer Services’ live call center can be reached at (877) 999-6442. They are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
