The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, and whether you’re a new, longtime or lifelong Florida resident, you should know how to prepare for hurricane season.

An average season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. Florida was predicted to have somewhat below-normal activity — with 13 named storms, including six hurricanes, two of which could be major.

Here are some tips to keep yourself safe in the event of a hurricane.

How to prepare before hurricane season

  • Evacuation plan: Plan where you would go and how you would get there, plan several routes.
  • Disaster supplies: Non-perishable food, water, medicine, extra cash, a battery-powered radio and flashlights.
  • Insurance checkup and document possessions: Call your insurance company and ask for an insurance check-up to make sure you have enough insurance to repair or replace your home and/or belongings.
  • Communication plan: Write down your hurricane plan and share it with your family, determine family meeting places including an out-of-town location in case of evacuation. Write down emergency contacts.
  • Prepare your home: Trim trees, install storm shutters, impact glass, get plywood, steel or aluminum panels incase you need to board up windows or doors.
