Hidden reason your car insurance rates could be climbing

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Thousands of drivers are reporting their insurance rates are going up and it could all be thanks to data collected behind the scenes.

A report shows cars made by GM, Ford, Honda and other popular manufacturers are sending your data to insurance companies and you might not even know about it.

In most of these vehicles, there is software tracking how you drive.

It keeps data about when you’re on the road, how fast you drive and how quickly you hit your breaks.

It’s all thanks to the ability of newer cars to connect to the internet.

The New York Times reports all that data gets sent off to your insurance company for a personalized rate.

And automakers say its all legal: Remember all those papers you signed when you bought that new car?

All of WCNC Charlotte’s podcasts are free and available for both streaming and download. You can listen now on Android, iPhone, Amazon, and other internet-connected devices. Join us from North Carolina, South Carolina, or on the go anywhere.
