Home insurance company seeks to be dropped from Gillis case

HEBRON, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The home insurance company used by Kevin Monahan said it is not liable for the shooting death of Kaylin Gillis. Gillis’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit and is seeking an unspecified amount of damages.

Monahan is seeking to have Preferred Mutual Insurance cover some of the costs. The company said Monahan’s policy only covers an accident and argues that because Monahan was convicted of murder, the shooting was intentional.

Investigators said Monahan fired two shots at a car Gillis was in when the car accidentally turned into Monahan’s driveway in April 2023 in Hebron.

Monahan is scheduled to be sentenced in March.
