Home Insurance Risks Are High In Texas, but Why? | News Radio 1200 WOAI

There have been a surprising number of Harris County residents who have seen their home insurance cancelled over the past year, partially because of newer flood plain maps, but there are other reasons too.

Insurance Council of Texas Director of Communications Rich Johnson says companies are more careful about risks and replacements these days.

Considering that a roof is the most expensive item to replace on a home, it’s a huge factor in insurance risks that Texas is prone to lots of wind and hail, elements that can quickly destroy a roof during storms — and storms? Texas has plenty of those, too.

Insurance companies are looking more carefully at “the kind of roofs that we’re installing, looking at not building in flood plains and not building in areas overly prone to wildfire like we’ve been doing for years,” he says.

“Y’know, the more we build, the more area we expose to risk, and along with that is more losses due to weather,” he adds, and while there may be some controversy over just how many Harris County residents have had their insurance cancelled, it’s not a reason to fret.

“The good news is there are still hundreds of companies doing business here in Texas, so if you happen to get that insurance non-renewal, you most likely will be able to find new insurance.”
