How Often Should You Be Inspecting Your Diamond Rings?

man shares ring tips (l) engagement ring (r)

Buying an engagement ring usually comes with big warnings, like don’t take it off near a sink. What no one seems to shout loudly enough? Read the fine print. One Florida man learned the hard way that skipping a tiny, boring six-month inspection can turn a sparkling symbol of love into a very expensive lesson. Now, he has a missing diamond, a voided insurance policy, and a PSA no couple should ignore.

Jared’s Tough Lesson

Jared’s fifty-second clip has couples everywhere clutching their pearls–er, rings. His TikTok has almost 44,000 views.

He begins, “Tell your wives to take your rings in and get them inspected and cleaned.” He then goes on to explain that he bought his wife a new ring two years ago and paid for the insurance. Jared continues, “One thing we messed up on, we didn’t have it inspected every six months, man. That’s where they get ya. If you don’t get it inspected every six months, insurance is voided.”

Jared says his wife lost the diamond, but since the insurance was void, he has to pay for a new diamond out of pocket. He then ends the video by urging viewers to get their rings inspected so they can avoid a similar situation. His text overlay reads: “DO NOT FORGET!!!!”

How Does an Insurance Inspection Plan Work?

While this phenomenon sounds unheard of, it appears that many well-known jewelers, like Kay Jewelers, Helzberg, or Riddler’s, have it in effect. On the Kay Jeweler’s website, the insurance is detailed as such under the Lifetime Diamond and Color Gemstone Guarantee.

“We will replace, free of charge, any diamond, emerald, ruby or sapphire covered by this Guarantee if it chips, breaks, or is lost from its original setting during normal wear. In order for your Diamond and Gemstone Guarantee to remain in effect, you must have your diamond and/or gemstone inspected and have the inspection documented every 6 months by an authorized representative. In addition, all necessary repairs must be completed by our representatives.” Riddle’s Jewelry has a similar description, and so does Helzberg.

Couples Everywhere are Shook

One viewer aptly captures everyone’s panic: “Sh-t.” Jared replies, “Learn from my mistakes.”

Another viewer wonders about the relevance of the plan: “Thats crazy. whats the point of insurance then? who’s got time for that.” To which Jared replies, “That’s how they get your money with out paying out.”

Some viewers have alternate ideas. “I would also get a different insurance. Like add another policy under your home insurance that doesn’t have that clause. That’s insane.” Another adds, “Also put it on your homeowners/renters insurance and it’ll cover lost or stolen, anywhere in the world.”

However, many chime in to share how they live with this type of plan. One viewer says, “I take mine in like clockwork. I have a repeating reminder in my calendar so I never forget.”

A second viewer writes, “Yesss I get mine inspected every 6months.. I lost my diamond last year and they replaced it! We got married 9 years ago.. it’s worth it!”
