How to drive safely on hazardous roads this winter | News

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The first significant snowfall of the year came to Rapid City, along with icy roads and hazardous driving conditions.

The Rapid City Police Department were busy responding to a spike in motor vehicle crashes and wanted to remind people to travel safely. Thursday, the police department responded to 41 accidents and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office responded to 58 and performed 31 motorist assists.

Department officials say people often need to adjust as winter weather moves into the area.

Brendyn Medina, public information officer for the Rapid City Police Department said, “The biggest thing is to slow down. With the icy conditions it takes longer to slow down. We’ve got to increase braking distances.”

Medina said speed is usually the biggest factor most of the accidents they see because of hazardous road conditions. He added that increasing following distance, taking turns more slowly and giving yourself more time to get to your destination can help keep drivers safe over the winter.
