How to protect your car from theft

Scott Holeman, with the Insurance Information Institute, said a lot of things can impact your insurance bill, including car theft.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Smashed windows and stolen cars — it’s something most people have heard about happening in and around the Columbus metro area.

Upper Arlington Police Division Sgt. Bryan McKean said car thefts haven’t gone down.

“We continue to see car break-ins, we continue to see car theft from motor vehicles and or motor vehicles,” McKean said.

So, what can you do to try and keep your car safe? McKean said if you own a gun, do not leave it in your car.

“Please don’t do that. When these cars get stolen, and there are firearms in there, then it creates a danger for the public,” McKean said.

McKean said if you can, avoid parking in lots. Instead, park in a parking garage and keep your car in well-lit areas.

“You want to have well-lit areas. When areas are dark, and there is a lot of street parking then that is an inviting opportunity for these types of thieves,” he said.

Another big factor to car break-ins is insurance. If your car is broken into, it can affect your insurance rate.

Scott Holeman, with the Insurance Information Institute, said a lot of things can impact your insurance bill, including car theft.

“That includes your driving history, your claims history, your credit score, where you live, where you drive, the kind of vehicle you drive and what your mileage is,” said Holeman.

Holeman said if you want to save money on your car insurance, bundle it with your home or renters insurance and raise your deductible.

When it comes to solutions to crime, police say everyone can help.

“We want people to point out suspicious behavior. We are not looking necessarily for individuals, but behavior. If you see someone looking into cars, going around trying door handles, you want to let us know that,” McKean said.
