Hurricane Ernesto’s centre predicted to pass near Bermuda

Residents on Bermuda have been advised to make their last-minute preparations for Hurricane Ernesto as the centre of the storm is predicted to pass very near the island on Saturday, bringing hurricane-force winds, dangerous seas, and a high likelihood of power outages.

Minister of National Security Michael Weeks in a media conference this afternoon said the rain that began yesterday afternoon is forecast to continue into the weekend which could result in low level flooding in some areas across the island.

By Friday evening officials anticipate strong gale force winds will begin to affect Bermuda, increasing in intensity as Ernesto approaches. Weeks said these winds are expected to escalate from storm to hurricane force by Saturday.

He stressed the importance of residents to use this time to prepare.

“We have seen in the past the devastating effects of complacency where a lack of preparation resulted in avertible tragedies.  Do not be lulled into thinking you can wait until the last minute. The window to prepare is closing rapidly and any delay could put you, your loved ones and your property at serious risk. This is not the time to underestimate the power of nature. Time is of the essence, preparations must be completed as soon as possible,” said Weeks.

The Minister of National Security listed some key actions which should be taken:

• Secure Your Property: Store outdoor furniture and items to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles.

• Boat Owners: Secure your vessels properly and ensure your boat insurance is up to date.

• Home Insurance: Verify your home insurance policies are current to avoid potential financial hardship.

• Stock Up on Essentials: Ensure you have enough food, water, medicine, and hurricane supplies like rope, power banks, spare batteries, and flashlights.

• Check on Neighbours: Especially look out for elderly and vulnerable residents to ensure their safety.

He said more key decisions will be announced on Thursday.

Director at the Bermuda Weather Service Michelle Pitcher said it looks like Hurricane Ernesto will be passing Bermuda around midday on Saturday to the left of the island, about 15 nautical miles to the left as a Category 2 hurricane.
