James Picard, 90 | Coeur d’Alene Press


James Henry Picard of Hayden, Idaho, died Friday, July 10, 2026, at the age of 90. He was born March 16, 1936, at home to Joseph and Alice (Hodson) Picard in Providence, R.I. 

At age three, his family moved to the village of Esmond to a home his dad built. He attended Dorothy Dame Elementary School, grades 1 through 8. He then continued his education, attending LaSalle Academy and Providence College. While in college, he joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve with a six-year commitment and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. James was united in marriage to Catherine Kirk on June 10, 1961. James started ground level in the insurance business in Providence and later moved to New York. He eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he managed for Hartford Insurance Company with offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. He retired in 2002 and moved to Hayden, Idaho. In retirement, he and Cathi traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Scandinavian countries. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and the food kitchen at Pope St. Pius X Catholic Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and golfing. 

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Sharon Picard, Susan Fernandez, Jennifer Yanez, Bethany Picard, Erin Picard and Gregory Picard; grandchildren Gavin and William Auld, Lianna and Mackenzie Yanez, Nicolas and Tyler Compton, Maya, Thalia and Danielle Picard; a brother, Joseph; and sisters Carol, Patricia and Barbara.  

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine “Cathi”; a son, James Robert “Bobby”; and a grandson, Ryley Shane Yanez.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 11 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 625 E. Haycraft Ave., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
