Mandatory fun after layoffs – Business Insurance

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg appears to have discovered a bold new workplace morale tool to boost employee satisfaction after a wave of layoffs: telling employees to stop being sad and start hacking.

For fun. Just like old times.

After Meta reportedly laid off 8,000 employees, about 10% of its workforce leaving the rest to manage heavier workloads, Zuckerberg announced plans for a companywide AI hackathon in July, according to a Futurism report. The company had hosted such events in the past. This time, however, many are reportedly not excited.

“I’m literally preoccupied with keeping the lights on for my team,” one employee wrote in an internal message quoted by Wired. “I have no incentive to participate, let alone have the time to do so.”

In a gesture that may have been intended as a perk, Mr. Zuckerberg also offered workers access to permanent desks. Many Meta employees had been using “hot desks,” the shared seating arrangement beloved by facilities departments and disliked by anyone who has ever wanted to leave a sweater at work.
