A Pennsylvania man is accused of defrauding his insurance company after filing a car-accident claim eight minutes after he bought the policy.
According to a criminal complaint accessed by WKBN News out of Grove City, Pennsylvania, the unnamed 25-year-old man had been driving without car insurance for eight months before buying a policy at 1:11 pm. on Oct. 4, 2023. He triggered the policy at 1:19 p.m. that same day, claiming his vehicle was hit on the interstate and the driver did not stop.
The man said his vehicle sustained rear-end damage, a cracked windshield, a popped front tire, and that the trunk would not close. He also said he had a headache, according to the news report.
The complaint states the defendant’s vehicle has been parked at a gas station in the area for several weeks before the alleged accident. In an interview with police, the defendant later admitted his vehicle had been damaged since June, months after he had canceled a previous insurance policy, according to the report.
