Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey recently signed legislation increasing the minimum coverage limits of auto insurance for some mandatory coverages.
These new limits will apply to policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025:
- Bodily Injury Coverage increases from $20,000 per person/$40,000 per accident to $25,000 per person/$50,000 per accident
- Property Damage Coverage increases from $5,000 to $30,000
The limits for the other mandatory coverages remain unchanged at:
- Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage (UM): $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident
- Personal injury Protection (PIP): $8,000 per person, per accident
According to an analysis by MarketWatch, the average cost of full coverage in the state has increased by 8% since 2023. The average cost of minimum coverage in the state was nearly the same in 2024 as in 2023. The average annual cost of minimum liability car insurance in Massachusetts is $759, which is about 13% cheaper than the national average of $869. Full coverage costs $2,620 per year on average, which is about 2% below the national average of $2,681 per year, MarketWatch reports.
