SUPPLY, N.C. (WECT) – North Carolina boaters who have not yet completed a state-required safety course have an upcoming opportunity to satisfy the requirement in a single day.
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will hold its “Boating America” course on Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation assembly room, 795 Ocean Highway (U.S. 17), Supply. The class runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
State law requires anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, to complete an approved boating safety course before operating a motorized vessel of 10 horsepower or greater on North Carolina waters. Boaters not subject to the requirement may also take the course, as completion can qualify them for a discount on boat insurance.
Certified USCG Auxiliary instructors will teach the curriculum, which applies to powerboats, personal watercraft, sailboats and paddle craft. Topics include boat maintenance, navigation rules, safe operation, emergency procedures and North Carolina boating laws. Participants who pass the exam receive a U.S. Coast Guard certificate and card.
The course fee is $35 per person, or $30 per person for groups of two or more. Payment is accepted by cash or check at the door. Credit cards are not accepted.
