(KTAL/KMSS) — Rent prices remain high across many of the nation’s largest housing markets in 2026, with New York City topping the list as the most expensive place to rent, according to data shared by Apartments.com.

The report lists New York with an average monthly rent of $4,107. Boston ranked second at $3,497, followed by San Francisco at $3,322. Jersey City, New Jersey, came in fourth at $3,229, while Sunnyvale, California, rounded out the top five at $2,998 per month.

The rankings highlight how rental costs continue to be highest in major coastal and technology-focused cities, where strong demand and limited housing supply have kept prices elevated. Annual rent in New York now exceeds $49,000 before additional expenses such as utilities, parking and renters insurance.
