Pa. car insurance rates see sharp decrease

A new report has looked into the change in car insurance rates across the country over the course of 2024.

Those in Pennsylvania were observed to have had a rather sharp decline.

According to a press release sent by MarketWatch Guides, car insurance rates fell from an average full cost of $326 to $197 in Pennsylvania throughout 2024, a 40 percent drop.

A MarketWatch Guides study which goes into further detail on this topic states that New York has the most expensive coverage at an average $185 a month.

However, MarketWatch Guides notes how various factors — age, credit score, location, driving history, etcetera — all impact the insurance quotes drivers might receive.

It should be noted, however, that California, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon and Utah have all outlawed the practice of using credit scores to determine which car insurance rates people receive. The other 43 states, though, can’t say the same.

“Almost daily I run across insureds who have no idea how much their credit score factors into their insurance premiums,” says Chris Johnson, Senior Producer at All About Insurance. “I see swings as much as $700 annually between poor credit and excellent credit.

“In addition, many carriers will deny coverage to insureds who do not have an acceptable credit score for their programs. Generally, auto insurers correlate higher credit scores with more stability, less likelihood for initiating claims as well as less chance for a policy canceling due to nonpayment.”
