PACIFIC PALISADES, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The Palisades Fire forever changed the lives of residents Mike Furnari, Frank Renfro, and Kambiz Kamdar.
I feel like I’ve been a construction therapist for people

But instead of abandoning their town, they’re helping the community they love to rebuild.
“After a disaster, everybody is thrown in this environment that they’re expected to become experts overnight,” said Furnari, who runs Pali Builds with Renfro and Kamdar.
“So nobody really has read the details of their insurance policy. Nobody really read details of … what it’s going to take in order to rebuild a home.”
Homeowners who are rebuilding often don’t know how much it will cost because insurance estimates are too low.
That’s why Pali Builds was created.

It’s an online tool for homeowners, home builders and architects that bridges the gap between insurance companies and contractors.
“The biggest blocker at this point is insurance, and there’s so many people who are ready to pull the trigger and want to build, but they just don’t have the funds to do it, or not sure what funds they’re going to get,” said Kamdar. “I feel like I’ve been a construction therapist for people.”
“In terms of getting more money from the insurance company, our power is limited,” explained Renfro. “What we can do is identify builders that have different economic models or revenue models, identifying builders that have different products at different price points. Where can we cut costs to get you back on your property?”
Pali Builds is currently renting a trailer in the middle of the Palisades Fire burn zone and every day, subcontractors working in the area drop off their information.
That’s when Pali Builds digitizes all the information to provide homeowners with the help they need.
Pali Builds is free and so far, has a few thousand users.
The founders believe an accurate construction estimate will save time and money for anyone who finds themselves just trying to return home.
“I’m a homeowner. I’m fire victim myself, and so yes, it’s my incentive to get my family back here and help others get their families back here,” said Furnari.
