Providing sailing news for sailors

The International Lightning Class Boat Grant Program was initiated to introduce young teams to Lightning sailing. Recipients receive regatta entry fees, boat insurance, some travel money, a nearly new boat, good sails, and a mentor to help get them started.

Since the program began in 2007, over 55 young teams have gotten involved in the class, with four more teams selected for the 2026 season.

“Our 2026 teams are a mix of recent and current strong collegiate sailors, underscoring the Class’s focus on encouraging young sailors to continue their involvement in one-design racing after college,” stated program co-chair Ryan Davidson.

Boat Grant Co-Chair Ched Proctor added, “The large group of talented applicants made working with the boat grant committee great fun this year. To select the four best qualified was a challenge. I’m looking forward to working with our selected candidates.” – Full report
