KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — A St. Albans man pleaded guilty Wednesday to defrauding the volunteer fire department he worked at and making false insurance claims after setting his own home on fire, prosecutors said.

Donald A. Ennis, 43, pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud in an investigation stemming from a 2021 fire in St. Albans, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia.

Prosecutors said Ennis admitted to filing false insurance claims to obtain $347,237 after intentionally setting fire to his own residence in February 2021. He obtained the insurance policy after purchasing the home in 2018.

Ennis told prosecutors he placed a series of claims electronically from Feb. 21, 2021, to March 19, 2021, fraudulently claiming losses from the fire, the news release said.

While working as a local volunteer fire department’s finance and operations manager, prosecutors said Ennis obtained $153,728 of the fire department’s funds through a series of ATM withdrawals and dozens of unauthorized online purchases with a debit card he had access to.

Prosecutors said the funds were used for his own benefit.

Ennis is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 18 and faces up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a maximum of $250,000 in fines. He will also owe more than $500,000 in restitution.
