State Insurance Commissioner’s office issues warning about scams post hailstorm

7 Ways To Save Money on Car Insurance As Inflation Soars

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Residents in Bismarck, Mandan and the surrounding areas are still dealing with the aftermath of a recent hailstorm and need to be on the lookout for scammers.

The North Dakota State Insurance Commissioner’s office issued a PSA encouraging those who are looking for a contractor to watch out for scams. He said it’s common for scammers to move into the area when disaster strikes. Signs to watch out for include: claiming to be FEMA-approved, requiring upfront payment to schedule a job, prohibiting you from speaking with your insurance company and more.

“These folks are generally high-pressure sales, they’re trying to get you to sign on the dotted line while you’re at the door. And again, it comes down to if somebody approaches your door and says, ‘Hey, I was just driving by and I saw some damage on your roof,’ I’d be on the lookout for that,” said State Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread.

Commissioner Godfread said so far, there’s been a few reports of possible scams. He said your insurance company should have a list of reputable contractors it can recommend.
