These Are the Highest Rated Car Insurance Companies in Every Region of the U.S.

The Most Affordable Auto Insurance Options for Recent College Grads

Finding the best car insurance isn’t always an easy task. The only way to compare prices directly is to get quotes from several companies. And even then, price doesn’t tell the whole story. Factors like available coverage options and customer service matter too, and these aren’t as easy to quantify.

So it’s always helpful when a company like J.D. Power does customer satisfaction research on behalf of drivers. It surveyed over 41,000 American drivers all across the U.S. to figure out which companies they thought deserved their dollars.

Here’s a look at which companies fared the best in each region of its 2024 U.S. Auto Insurance Study.

California: Auto Club of Southern California (AAA)

California AAA members have found a lot to love about its car insurance. It saves drivers an average of $506 when they switch, according to AAA’s website, and it offers all the core protections motorists need. Drivers who opt to join AAA also get access to its other exclusive perks, including travel benefits and roadside assistance.

Central: Shelter Insurance

Shelter Insurance just barely eked out a fourth consecutive win in the Central region, which encompasses Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. In addition to great service, the company offers a long list of car insurance discounts and rare protections, like disability income coverage.

Florida: Auto-Owners Insurance

Auto-Owners Insurance is only available through a network of independent agents, so the quality of its service can vary depending on which agent a driver is dealing with. That said, if its Florida ratings are any indication, most of its customers there appear to have a good experience. Since you have to work with an agent to obtain a quote, it’s also a great option for those who aren’t quite sure what kind of coverage they need and want a little assistance.

Mid-Atlantic: Erie Auto Insurance

The Mid-Atlantic region comprises Delaware, Washington D.C., Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. For a third consecutive year, this region chose Erie Auto Insurance as its favorite. It stands out because it offers a lot of rare protections, like pet injury coverage and locksmith services, at no additional charge. It also has a long list of optional protections, so it’s easy to build a custom policy.

New England: Amica

Amica won the New England region, which consists of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The company offers comprehensive car insurance protection and puts a strong emphasis on customer service. It also offers a variety of a la carte options for those seeking rare car insurance endorsements.

New York: Travelers

Travelers offers all the key protections New York drivers need as well as several extras. It also has a long list of driver discounts. Those who qualify for several of these will likely be able to find affordable car insurance here, in addition to quality service.

North Central: Erie Auto Insurance

Erie Auto Insurance also took the top spot in the North Central region, comprising Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. This was its fourth consecutive win in this region, and it won by a pretty substantial margin. It’s definitely worth a closer look for drivers in these states who want comprehensive and flexible coverage backed by top-notch customer service.

Northwest: PEMCO Insurance

The Northwest region — Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming — gave PEMCO Insurance the top spot in this year’s survey. It has a big appeal thanks to its unique protections like custom parts and equipment coverage and camper, canopy, and tonneau coverage. And it has a plethora of discounts to help drivers keep their costs down.

Southeast: Alfa Insurance

Residents of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee voted Alfa Insurance as their top car insurance company. It doesn’t have as many optional protections as some of its competitors, but its many discounts, including several occupational and affinity discounts, helps it keep rates reasonable.

Southwest: CSAA Insurance Group (AAA)

The Southwest region — Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah — considered AAA the best car insurance company in their region. It took the top spot by 24 points. That’s a pretty wide margin for these surveys.

Texas: Texas Farm Bureau Insurance

Texas Farm Bureau Insurance was the most popular choice in the Lone Star State. It offers all the important protections a driver could need and some valuable driver discounts. It’s also taken the top spot in this region in 12 of the last 13 years.

Honorable mention: USAA

USAA swept every region of the J.D. Power U.S. Auto Insurance survey in terms of customer service. But it’s usually mentioned as an aside since it’s only open to military members, veterans, and their families. However, drivers who fit into one of these categories should definitely check it out.

While the companies listed above are great places for drivers to begin their search for the best car insurance, it’s important to get quotes from three to five companies before settling on one. Each company weighs risk differently, and some offer better deals to certain types of drivers than others.
