Three cats killed in New Market house fire

Two women and a child were able to escape the house fire near Highway 11 E thanks to smoke detectors, New Market Volunteer Fire Department said.

NEW MARKET, Tennessee — Investigators are working to determine the cause of a house fire that killed three cats on Wednesday morning.

According to the New Market Volunteer Fire Department, the fire started around 2 a.m. on Highway 11 E near the Department of Children’s Services Building.

Firefighters said two women and a child were in the home at the time but were able to get out safely. Crews said flames were shooting through the roof when they arrived at the scene.

“They had smoke detectors and that is what woke the lady up and she got her daughter and granddaughter out and they ran out of the house,” said New Market Volunteer Fire Department Captain Sammy Solomon.

Firefighters believe the fire may have started in the garage of the home. The family is now staying with other family members and did not have renters insurance.
