Insureify, an insurance comparison website, conducted an analysis to identify the cities at highest risk of flooding in the United States in 2023.
Statewide, Louisiana and Florida are at highest risk of flooding. However, flood risk varies across the United States, and residents of some cities in New York and New Jersey may also see their property at risk.
Insureify says, “In general, homeowners in flood-prone cities should be aware of the risks, how to mitigate them, and how to protect themselves against the associated costs by purchasing the appropriate amount of flood and home insurance.” “
This information becomes relevant when we consider that an inch of water in a home can cause $25,000 worth of property damage, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Insurify created a flood risk score that takes into account the FEMA risk score for each city’s coastal and riverine flood risk. The researchers also took into account each city’s population, median home insurance premiums and median home value.
