An 18-year-old in Holly Hill had a close call when a company work van crashed into his house, right into the bedroom as he lay in his bed talking on the phone just after 12:30 on Tuesday. The teen and his mother spoke out in the moments after the crash occurred on 8th Street.“The house is a house, but my son is my son. I don’t care about my house. I care about my son,” Jennifer Trask said. Trask’s son Christopher is OK, suffering just a few scratches after the driver of a van for a local roofing and air conditioning company veered off the road and into the family home. The van slammed into the front bedroom, Christopher Trask’s room, as he lay on his bed talking on the phone to a friend. “It missed him by like 2 inches. He said part of the wall came flying up on him. I’m just happy the air conditioner didn’t fly ‘cause we have window units. That didn’t fly in his face,” Jennifer Trask said. Trask was on her way back to work but quickly turned around, shocked and frightened, but relieved to see her son in one piece. She was stunned at the extent of the damage. The family rents the home, and unfortunately, they don’t have renters insurance.“I’m trying to mask with smiling, because if not, I’m just going to break down crying, because I don’t even know what the next step is,” Jennifer Trask said. The driver of the truck declined to comment. He did have some minor injuries but was treated at the scene and refused to go to the hospital by ambulance. Police at the scene say he will be charged with failure to use due care.“I couldn’t think because it was just so fast,” Christopher Trask said. Christopher Trask didn’t know what was going on at first. Then suddenly, debris was flying. His glasses were ripped off his face.“It sounded kind of like lightning. Like if lightning hit right next to you. That’s what it sounds like, but instead you look up and it’s a truck right near your bed,” he said. Christopher Trask’s sister was in the bedroom next to his and there were others inside. All got out safely but there’s a lot of work to do before they can call this home again. City officials say owners of the company whose driver hit the house are making arrangements to return shortly, and at least do some shoring up of the room that was hit. Officials say the rest of the house is safe to stay in.
