The Czech government has decided to increase payments to Ukrainian refugees against the background of changes in the rules for providing free housing to migrants from 1 September.

According to ukraina.radio.cz, the payments will be increased from 1 August.

How much will Ukrainians in the Czech Republic receive?

According to the decision of the government, housing costs will increase to 6,000 crowns (237 euros) per month for vulnerable categories and to 4,000 crowns (58 euros) – for all others. Up to five people in one household will continue to be counted for the purpose of calculating assistance.

One significant change was the equalisation of payments for everyone, regardless of whether the housing where refugees live is registered in a special register. Previously, the amount of payments varied depending on this factor.

Now only those refugee households whose income does not exceed the subsistence minimum and housing costs as determined by the Ministry of Labour will be eligible for humanitarian assistance. The amount of humanitarian aid will be equal to the difference between the specified amount and the family income.

What else can Ukrainians in the Czech Republic expect from 1 September?

It is worth noting that until 1 September in the Czech Republic, the following rules for free housing assistance apply:

– for 150 days: for most people with temporary protection status;

– indefinitely: for vulnerable categories: children and adolescents under 18 years of age, students, pregnant women, elderly people over 65 years of age, people with disabilities, carers or carers of children under 6 years of age.

Already from 1 September, the period of free accommodation will be reduced to 90 days for all refugees without exception, including vulnerable categories. Those who have already used 90 days of free accommodation before September will have to move out or start paying for housing.

At the same time, trade unions oppose this decision by the government. They believe the changes have high risks of making those who cannot work and are not eligible for humanitarian aid homeless. The Ombudsman for Human Rights warns that Ukrainians are at risk of being illegally employed, exploited or forced to return to Ukraine.

We remind you! Now the Czech Republic is home to more than 300,000 Ukrainians who had to flee the war. This country provides shelter to refugees who have already enjoyed protection in other European countries. How to get temporary protection in the Czech Republic after arriving from another European country, we tell you here.
