Older drivers can cut down on car insurance bills by fitting one thing to their cars

Older drivers could make massive car insurance savings by installing a dash cam in their vehicles, according to a leading expert.

Bryn Brooker, CEO of dash cam firm Nextbase has suggested the video technology could elderly road users keep hold of their no-claims discount.

This usually slices hundreds off a car insurance bill as it provides evidence that a motorist is safe behind the wheel.

However, being blamed for an accident will see drivers lose this bonus with premiums expected to rise soon after.

With a “perception” that older drivers are more at risk than younger demographics, videos could be a vital evidence tool to stop cases in their tracks.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Bryn said: “We believe dash cams can help drivers of all ages.

“But given there is a perception that older or younger drivers are more likely to be at fault in any accident, dash cams can be especially helpful for proving you weren’t at fault in a crash – whether that be to the police or your insurer.

“We’ve seen people really benefit from insurance discounts – and with older drivers these are typically people who have experience and nine plus years with a no claims discount.

“It’s these people who benefit the most from keeping that huge discount on their insurance and are also rewarded more by insurers for driving with a dash cam.

“Insurers know that a dash cam driver is statistically a safer driver (35 percent safer according to independent insurer research) and are therefore willing to give discounts.”

The news comes after analysis from Compare the Market revealed the importance of a no-claims bonus on average prices.

New data shows that car insurance prices could drop by almost a third (32 percent) after just one year of having a no-claims discount.

This alone could save motorists a staggering £732 per year with extra savings on offer the longer drivers remain incident free.

Michelle Smith, senior motor underwriter at LV= has previously revealed the extent dash cams can impact insurance policies.

She explained: “Installing a dash cam can definitely be of benefit for customers at the point of an accident claim, or for evidence where someone has driven into our customer’s vehicle and then driven off.

“If we have the registration number of the vehicle, we can then look to trace the offender and make a claim from the third party, potentially meaning that our policyholder won’t lose their no-claim discount.”
