(WTNH) – We are officially in moving season and if you’re planning to pack your bags for a rental, you may be wondering what to do about renters insurance. We are stretching your dollar with a guide.

As you use the warmer months to move into a new home, it’s important you secure your belongings. Renters, considering renters insurance may be making a good move for your wallet.

Financial expert, Clark Howard, said it can protect you from theft, water damage, vandalism, fire, smoke and lightning. It’s important to know it costs around $15 to $30 a month and will typically protect your furniture, clothing and electronics. However, Howard noted it excludes fine art and jewelry.

It’s also important college students also consider this as they look for housing in the fall. It’s something they may need to add to their budget if they’ll be living off-campus.

While renters insurance may seem like just another expense during hard economic times, Howard noted it’s less expensive than what you’d have to pay when the unexpected happens.

Also speaking of college students, it’s important to note that only the policyholder would be covered unless roommates are specifically named on the policy.
