Louisiana mayors discuss insurance crisis during convention in Shreveport | News

SHREVEPORT, La. – Louisiana mayors are looking to next year’s Legislature for help to combat the higher cost of insurance.

More than 1,200 mayors, city council members and local officials met  in Shreveport this week for the Annual Convention of the Louisiana Municipal Association. It was held at the Shreveport Convention Center.

Top of the agenda is the skyrocketing cost of property and health insurance that cities, towns and villages are paying each year.

According to Realtor.com, Louisiana has some of the highest homeowner’s insurance rates in the country at more $7,800 annually.

The average insurance rate is just over $2.300 annually in the United States.

But, the insurance crisis isn’t just impacting homeowners.

Mayor Tom Arceneuax says city’s are taking a hit as well.

“The biggest increase right now is the property insurance,” Arceneaux said. “Lots of municipalities are having difficulties even finding property insurance. We are having to look at how we are going to do our insurance and manage our insurance for the 2025 fiscal year.”

The Annual Convention of the Louisiana Municipal Association wrapped up Saturday.
