MARION, Ind. (WISH) — The Grant County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning Saturday afternoon regarding a car insurance policy text message scam.
The sheriff’s office says police received information about a text message going around, claiming that a “refund from prior auto coverage” is ready. The text also asks recipients to verify their 2026 status in order to withdraw a balance.
“This is a scam,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.
Police say the messages are designed to make people believe they owe money from a previous insurance policy.
The scam text includes a link, which directs you to a page, asking people to provide personal information such as their name, address, date of birth, banking information, driver’s license information, and insurance details.
Police say in some cases, the link may also be used to collect login information or place “malicious” software on your device.
“Do not click the link. Do not provide personal or financial information. Do not reply to the message. Delete it and report it as junk or spam.”
Police say a few red flags in this message include:
- It comes from a short, random number.
- It does not identify a real insurance company.
- It uses urgent wording like “verify now.”
- It includes a suspicious link.
- It claims money is waiting for you, but requires you to click first.
“If you believe you may actually be owed a refund from an insurance company, contact your insurance provider directly using a verified phone number from your policy documents, insurance card, or the company’s official website.”
